Lemon’s Take On The UK Government’s Recent Mandatory Face Mask Rulin
It was announced by the UK Government this week that wearing face masks is to be made mandatory in shops from 24th July. The police will have powers to leverage fines of up to £100 for people who choose to flout these rules. Face masks have already been compulsory on public transport since 15th June, and mandatory in ‘enclosed spaces’ in Scotland, since last week. Despite this however, the adoption of these coverings by the English general public prior to now has been mixed, to say the least. Now that there’s no choice, people will need to sort out a face covering of some sort.
The team here at Lemon, a workplace solutions provider and personal protective equipment distributor, wanted to look at what the news means, the different kinds of facial covering available and what we offer here at Lemon.
What Do They Mean by Face Mask?
Many people confuse equipment like face masks with PPE (personal protective equipment). In fact, as a personal protective equipment distributor, we spend a lot of our time informing our customers as to the difference! Face masks and respirators are different products. Face masks aren’t classed as PPE whereas respirators are, but that’s not to say that face masks aren’t helpful.
Face masks/coverings can help to reduce the spread of viral transmission by capturing airborne droplets from the wearer. A suitable face mask will help prevent these droplets from becoming airborne.
The Environment Secretary, George Eustice, broke the news on Monday in the daily COVID press briefing. During his statement, he said that “any type of covering will be acceptable”. This should put a lot of people at ease, knowing that they don’t now desperately have to trawl the internet looking for state-of-the-art medical-grade options. Face masks aren’t ‘one-size-fits-all’ when it comes to the types available, meaning that whatever your situation, or preference, you should be able to find one that suits you!
What Are The Different Kinds Of Face Mask?
What, then, are these different kinds? Well, the following are all examples of face coverings you can buy – or make - so that you’re ready for the ruling to come into effect.
Disposable Face Masks
Disposable coverings typically come in the form of surgical type face masks (these pleated blue face coverings are what most people think of when they think of the term face mask). These masks are highly effective at helping prevent transmission. A downside, however, is that they’re only single-use.
Reusable Face Masks
For the more environmentally conscious buyer, reusable face masks are a great alternative to disposable coverings. These masks tend to be washable, and come with varying guidance on how many times to use them, according to the brand or material in question.
If you’re unable to get your hands on a purpose-manufactured mask of any kind (though we’ve got so many in stock, we’d be surprised!). The best material to use to make your own face covering is something that won’t irritate the skin, and that can be machine-washed. There are countless tutorials online on how to make one of these masks, and you’ll have your own face covering in no time at all.
One thing we would say, though, is that purpose-produced coverings are specially designed, whereas your homemade efforts won’t be. This means they may not be as effective; for instance, the material you choose to use may actually let droplets through by being too breathable! Clearly however, using a face covering is favourable to wearing nothing whatsoever!
What Do We Offer Here At Lemon?
We offer various types of face masks, and we always have large quantities in stock! The types we offer include:
· 3-ply disposable face masks
· Reusable cotton face masks (which can last up to 20 washes)
· Reusable cotton/Silvadur face masks (which can last up to 50 washes)
Further to this, we offer bespoke branding options so that your masks can still represent your company, for instance. If these guidelines are going to be here for a while, there’s no reason why your business’ professionalism should have to be compromised just because everyone’s wearing a mask! Face coverings help re-establish that slick, professional feel that’s been missing over the past few months.
Do We Offer Other Protective Equipment?
As a workplace solutions provider, we also offer other protective equipment, including nitrile chemical resistant gloves, ear protection, surface wipes, industrial liquid soap (and dispensers), Oxyl-pro sanitizers and much more!
Ultimately, any face covering is better than nothing, especially after the recent announcement. The chances are that the guidelines regarding facial coverings will be around for some time yet. The phrase ‘the new normal’ has been bandied around a huge amount over the past few months, perhaps even more so than the phrase ‘unprecedented’, and that’s saying something! The point, however, is that this really is the new normal, so whether you like it or not, face masks are here to stay! With the new fines in place, and a collective social responsibility, as a nation, hopefully these coverings will further reduce the
spread of the virus. So, if you’d like to find out more about Lemon’s work as a Personal Protective Equipment Distributor, or any of our other services, then get in touch! Contact us today on 01403 338 787. Alternatively, you can message us using one of our online forms!
